Nathan Merchant serves as an Honorary Lecturer in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia and is a Member of the Collaborative Centre for Sustainable Use of the Seas. He also holds the position of Principal Scientist in Noise & Bioacoustics at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), where he provides scientific advice on underwater noise to UK government bodies including Defra, MMO, and NRW. Internationally, he co-chairs the OSPAR Intersessional Correspondence Group on noise, providing scientific coordination for North-East Atlantic nations.
Dr. Merchant's research centers on underwater noise pollution and its impact on marine life. His work bridges the fields of acoustics, marine ecology, and environmental policy, with particular focus on how human-generated noise affects marine mammals and ecosystems. He has developed expertise in passive acoustic monitoring techniques and the assessment of anthropogenic noise impacts in marine environments, contributing significantly to marine conservation efforts and policy development.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on marine bioacoustics, with particular emphasis on the effects of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals. Merchant's research spans both theoretical and applied aspects of underwater acoustics, with significant contributions to understanding how noise pollution impacts marine ecosystems. His highly cited 2021 Science paper 'The soundscape of the Anthropocene ocean' represents a landmark contribution to the field, receiving extensive policy citations and media attention.
Dr. Merchant has received notable recognition for his work, most prominently the A.B. Wood Medal from the Institute of Acoustics in 2018 for distinguished contributions to the application of underwater acoustics. His research has been referenced in multiple policy sources and has received significant attention in both academic and public spheres, with several publications gaining widespread media coverage and policy impact.
Through his advisory work with national and intergovernmental bodies including Defra, MMO, OSPAR, EU, and UN, Merchant plays a critical role in translating scientific research into actionable marine conservation policies. His expertise has been instrumental in developing management measures to reduce the impact of underwater noise pollution, particularly in the context of offshore windfarm development and aquaculture operations.
