Nathan Ahlgren is a Professor at Clark University, where he maintains an active research laboratory focused on marine microbial ecology and environmental genomics. His work spans multiple research areas including cyanobacterial evolution, viral ecology, and more recently, epidemiological studies related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Ahlgren's research interests center around understanding microbial population dynamics in marine environments, particularly focusing on Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus cyanobacteria and their viral predators. His work employs genomic, metagenomic, and bioinformatic approaches to investigate host-virus interactions, niche partitioning, and evolutionary adaptation in marine microbial communities. More recently, he has expanded his research to include societal factors influencing the spread and impact of infectious diseases, as evidenced by his epidemiological work on structural racism and COVID-19 outcomes.
His publication record demonstrates consistent research productivity with numerous high-impact papers in journals such as Environmental Microbiology, Nature Microbiology, and ISME Journal. His research spans marine microbial ecology, viral evolution, genomic adaptation, and environmental epidemiology, showing both depth in his core field and expansion into related areas addressing contemporary global challenges.
Dr. Ahlgren teaches courses at Clark University and leads The Genome Project course, where students engage in publishable research as evidenced by multiple student-authored publications in microbiology journals.
