Natasha Sarah Lucas

Dr. Natasha Lucas is a Physical Oceanographer at the School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University, with expertise in observational oceanography, ocean turbulence and mixing, and tidal energy convertors. She currently sits on the SCOR working group ATOMIX, focusing on quantifying ocean turbulence.

Research Interests center on small-scale ocean processes (0.1m–10km) affecting heat, salt, and biological tracer distribution. Key areas include Agulhas leakage current, submesoscale instabilities, and iceberg-ocean interactions. Her work bridges climate science and marine renewable energy applications.

Scientific Awards include the Antarctic Science Bursary 2023, UKRI Instant Recognition Award 2023, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She previously received the Rank Prize Funds Laser Ablation Award 2004 and European Space Agency World Space Congress Award 2002.

Her advising and outreach include supervising MSc and PhD students and conducting oceanographic roadshows at festivals like WOMAD. She designed undergraduate curricula for the Institute of Physics and led engineering workshops.
