Dr Natalya Chernyshova is a Senior Lecturer in Modern European History at Queen Mary University of London, School of History. She specializes in Soviet Union and Eastern European history, with a focus on Belarusian history, Soviet nationalities politics, material culture, and everyday life during late socialism. Her research has been supported by the British Academy and other institutions.
Education:
- BAs from American University in Bulgaria and Minsk State Linguistic University
- MA and PhD from King's College London
Research Interests: Post-Stalin Soviet and Belarusian history, Soviet nationalism, ethnic relations, material culture, and modern nation-building in Soviet Belarus. Her current book project examines Belarus during 1965–1980, challenging perceptions of the republic as a passive Soviet entity.
Publications & Grants: Authored Soviet Consumer Culture in the Brezhnev Era (2013) and numerous peer-reviewed articles. Funded by British Academy, IHR, and Royal Historical Society.
Awards: Fellowships from Royal Historical Society and Higher Education Academy.
Teaching & Experience: Taught at University of Winchester (2008–2022) and King's College London. Media work includes commentary for BBC, France24, and policy papers on Belarusian politics.
Supervision: Advising Darya Lis on a PhD about Belarusian postcolonial discourse.
Public Engagement: Delivered lectures, podcasts, and documentaries on Belarus, Soviet history, and the Ukraine war's geopolitical context.
