Narayanan Neithalath is the Fulton Professor of Structural Materials in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University's Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. He also holds affiliations as a Senior Global Futures Scientist and is associated with multiple research centers including the Center for Carbon-Efficient and Advanced Manufacturing of Materials and Structures (CAMMS), the Global Futures Laboratory, and the Adaptive Intelligent Materials and Systems Center (AIMS).
Education:
- Ph.D in Civil Engineering (Concrete Materials), Purdue University, 2004
Professor Neithalath's research focuses on developing sustainable solutions for concrete and cement production. His work spans the materials science of novel, sustainable cement-based materials, decarbonization of infrastructural materials manufacturing, and additive manufacturing (3D printing) of concrete. He has extensively worked on sustainable cementitious systems such as binary and ternary limestone blends, alkali activated concretes, phase change material-embedded systems, and carbonated binders. His research aims to make concrete production eco-friendly, improve cement manufacturing, and advance construction processes toward carbon neutrality.
Scientific Awards:
- Fellow of the American Concrete Institute
- ASCE's Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize
Professor Neithalath has successfully secured numerous research grants totaling millions of dollars to advance sustainable construction materials. His current projects include "NSF Engines Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine," "Assessing the contribution of freeway surface types to Phoenix's Urban Heat Island," "Stormwater BMPs-Phase II," and "FMRG: Eco: Reimagining Cement Manufacturing for Carbon Neutrality (NeutraCEM)." Through these projects, he mentors numerous graduate students working on cutting-edge research in sustainable construction materials and processes.
Professor Neithalath leads the Neithalath Lab, which focuses on structural materials for sustainable construction, manufacturing approaches for sustainable materials, special-performance concretes, and materials modeling. His lab is at the forefront of developing innovations to decarbonize concrete production and improve construction sustainability.
