Naomi Nota is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. Her research investigates language processing in challenging conditions such as noisy environments and among populations with hearing impairment. Previously, she completed her PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics / Donders Centre for Cognition and Behaviour, Radboud University, focusing on how visual bodily signals contribute to language processing.
Her research interests span language prediction affected by cognitive load, noise, and hearing impairment; multimodal communication; and bilingual children's reading processes. She employs conversation corpora and behavioral experiments with virtual agents and eye-tracking, analyzing data using mixed effects modeling, Bayesian statistics, time series analysis, and machine learning techniques including clustering.
Nota actively supervises students including Tiggs Nicholson, Elia Muller, Sofia Beaucage, Margaret Swanson, Deniz Şahin, and Leyla Yanik. Her publications demonstrate expertise in visual-world eye-tracking paradigms, facial signal analysis, and cognitive load effects on language processing. She has presented at major conferences including AMLaP, ISGS, and EPS.
As a science communicator, she participates in conferences, outreach events, and writes blogs for MPI TalkLing. She also works as a freelance illustrator in her spare time, creating art that complements her academic work. Nota maintains active supervision opportunities and welcomes collaboration on research, science communication, and illustration projects.
