Dr. Naomi Koerner is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research focuses on integrating cognitive psychology concepts with cognitive-behavioral theories and treatments for anxiety-related disorders, particularly generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). She holds a PhD from Concordia University and leads studies on cognitive mechanisms in anxiety, exposure-based treatments, and cognitive training interventions.
- PhD, Concordia University (2007)
Her research explores the causal role of cognitive processes in worry and anxiety, mechanisms of imaginal exposure therapy for GAD, and proof-of-concept experiments for cognitive training procedures. Her work often examines constructs like intolerance of uncertainty and emotional regulation.
Dr. Koerner’s recent publications highlight trends in understanding cognitive biases (e.g., interpretation bias), the role of self-concept clarity in anxiety, and the application of cognitive models to refine therapeutic interventions. Her studies frequently employ experimental psychopathology methods to bridge theory and practice.
She has secured competitive research grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Ontario Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science. Although no formal scientific awards are listed, her funding highlights her contributions to anxiety research.
Dr. Koerner’s academic work also includes advising on studies related to emotional regulation and cognitive processes in anxiety disorders. She is affiliated with the Cognitive Anxiety Processes Lab (CAPLab) at Toronto Metropolitan University, which investigates anxiety mechanisms through experimental and clinical approaches.
