Dr Naomi Holmes is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Education at the University of York, jointly appointed in the Department of Education and the Department of Environment and Geography. Previously, she held an Associate Professor position in Geography and Environmental Education at Sheffield Hallam University. Her work bridges physical geography, education pedagogy, and outdoor learning. She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and an Accredited Practitioner of the Institute of Outdoor Learning.
Dr Holmes' research focuses on geography pedagogy in higher education, outdoor learning accessibility, and environmental change communication. She actively promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM education, particularly through her roles as Education Officer for the Royal Geographical Society’s Geography & Education Research Group and committee member of the Community for Environmental Disciplines in Higher Education.
Her publications emphasize fieldwork innovation, climate change education, and inclusive research practices. Notable contributions include co-editing the Routledge Handbook of Field Research (2025) and developing frameworks for accessible fieldwork design. She also leads initiatives to address microaggressions in academic environments and enhance student engagement through continuous e-assessment.
Dr Holmes integrates applied outdoor learning into teaching and assessment, advocating for equitable access to scientific participation. She collaborates internationally on projects such as the Skálafellsjökull glacial studies in Iceland and citizen-science investigations into urban soil contamination.
