Naoko Perkiö Kato is an Associate Professor (Docent) at Linköping University's Faculty of Medicine, affiliated with the Division of Nursing Sciences and Reproductive Health within the Department of Health, Medicine and Caring Sciences (HMV). Her primary research focus is improving self-care behaviors in patients with heart failure, with a particular emphasis on developing e-health interventions and assessment tools for chronic disease management. She holds editorial roles in journals such as the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and the Journal of Japanese Association of Cardiovascular Nursing.
Dr. Kato holds a PhD in Health Science from the University of Tokyo (2010) and has conducted postdoctoral research in Japan and Sweden. Her academic career includes roles at the University of Tokyo, Linköping University, and the University of Toyama. She is a member of the CESAR Network, a regional collaborative for cardiovascular nursing research.
Her research projects include a home-based e-health support program for heart failure patients and the development of an instrument to measure self-care capabilities in LVAD recipients. She also investigates telemonitoring and exergaming interventions to improve patient outcomes. Awards include the Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award (2022) and recognition from the Heart Failure Society of America (2007).
In teaching, she instructs nursing students in clinical practice and supervises academic work at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Her work bridges clinical practice, technology, and patient-centered care to enhance the quality of life for cardiovascular patients.
