Dr. Nanpeng Yu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Riverside, where he directs the Smart City Innovation Laboratory. His research focuses on machine learning and big data analytics applications in power distribution systems, including network topology identification, electricity theft detection, behind-the-meter solar generation estimation, and data-driven distribution system controls. Prior to his academic career, Yu worked as a senior power system planner and project manager at Southern California Edison.
Yu develops hybrid algorithms that combine machine learning with physical model-based methods to address challenges in modern power systems. His research contributes to more efficient and reliable energy infrastructure through innovative applications of data science in grid management and renewable energy integration. Under his direction, the Smart City Innovation Laboratory explores data-driven solutions for urban energy challenges.
