Nandini Pandey is an Associate Professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. She specializes in Roman literature, history, and visual culture, with a focus on race, identity, and classical reception. Her research explores how ancient texts and art shaped power dynamics and identities, from Augustan Rome to modern diversity initiatives. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
Her award-winning monograph The Poetics of Power in Augustan Rome (2018) examines Latin poets’ engagement with Augustus’ propaganda. Her current project investigates diversity in the Roman Empire, informed by modern DEI frameworks. Supported by organizations like the American Council of Learned Societies, her work bridges academia and public humanities through writing for broader audiences and advocacy for inclusive scholarship.
Professor Pandey actively serves on editorial boards and support networks for marginalized scholars. She previously taught at UW-Madison and returned to Baltimore to engage with local communities, emphasizing classics’ relevance to contemporary issues. Her interdisciplinary approach combines textual analysis with material culture, politics, and identity studies.
