Associate Professor Nancy Sturman is a distinguished academic clinician in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. She serves as Associate Professor and Speciality Lead for General Practice within the General Practice Clinical Unit and is currently the deputy Head of the Mayne Academy of General Practice. With extensive clinical experience in Australian general practice since 1990 across both metropolitan and rural settings, she brings substantial practical expertise to her academic roles while maintaining active clinical practice as a general practitioner with UQ Healthcare.
Dr. Sturman's research spans three interconnected domains: health and social care for vulnerable populations, medical education and general practice training, and the craft of general practice. Her work on vulnerable populations focuses on healthcare access for people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and substance use issues, with recent publications examining digital health access for homeless populations and care for patients with severe mental illness. In medical education, she investigates work-based learning, ethical issues and professionalism, self-monitoring and help-seeking behaviors, and assessment methodologies in general practice training. Her exploration of the craft of general practice examines relational aspects of care, GP well-being, and interprofessional partnerships.
Her scholarly output reveals consistent focus on improving general practice training systems and care for marginalized populations, with recent publications demonstrating growing interest in digital health access for vulnerable groups and the relational dimensions of care. Her work consistently bridges clinical practice and academic inquiry, with strong emphasis on practical applications that improve patient care and training outcomes.
Dr. Sturman has held significant leadership positions including chairing the School of Medicine's Assessment Sub-committee (2013-2016) and serving as Deputy Chair of the University of Queensland Medical Research Ethics Committee (2013-2016). She is the Senior Academic Advisor with the Education Research Unit of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and chairs the Brisbane North Primary Health Network Clinical Council. Her scholarship has secured multiple research grants including current projects on personalized digital tools for pain management, eating disorders and spirituality, and security in GP-patient relationships.
