Dr. Nancy Locklin-Sofer is a Professor of History at Maryville College, affiliated with the Division of Humanities. She holds a B.A. from Hartwick College, an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. from Emory University. Her research focuses on pre-modern Europe, particularly France, with an emphasis on women’s roles in family and economic structures, legal systems, and criminal justice. Her notable works include Women’s Work and Identity in Eighteenth-century Brittany (2007) and Murder, Justice, and Harmony in an Eighteenth-Century French Village (2019). Currently, she leads the Night Marauder Project, collaborating with students to investigate a local historical cold case, culminating in a forthcoming book. Dr. Locklin-Sofer is passionate about experiential learning, designing role-playing games like the Witch Hunt RPG and Silk Road Trading Game to engage students in historical analysis.
Her teaching spans First-Year Seminars, Ancient World surveys, and thematic courses on topics such as Ancient Rome, Medieval Love, Witch Hunts, and the Enlightenment. She prioritizes combining research and teaching in a small, community-oriented academic environment.
