Nakia D. Parker serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Michigan State University, specializing in nineteenth-century U.S. slavery, African American, and American Indian history.
Her research investigates the intersection of slavery and Native American history through the lens of forced removals, with current work centered on her book manuscript Trails of Tears and Freedom: Black Life in Indian Slave Country, 1830-1866. This project reconstructs labor practices, family structures, and resistance strategies of enslaved and Afro-Native communities within Choctaw and Chickasaw territories, emphasizing slavery's role in Indigenous dispossession and resettlement in Indian Territory.
