Nadia Nurhussein is a Professor of English and Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins University, holding the Mary Elizabeth Garrett Chair in Arts and Sciences and serving as Director of Graduate Studies. She is affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and teaches in the English Department. Her research focuses on African American literature, late 19th- and early 20th-century American literature, and poetry studies.
Education: PhD in English (2004, University of California, Berkeley). Previous teaching roles include University of Massachusetts, Boston (2005–2016) and Mount Holyoke College (2004–2005).
Research highlights include Black Land: Imperial Ethiopianism and African America (2019) and Rhetorics of Literacy (2013). She recently edited The Pedro Gorino (2024). Her work explores intersections of race, imperialism, and literary history.
Awards include fellowships from the Ford Foundation, Beinecke Library (Yale), and ACLS. Her contributions bridge African American literary studies with broader cultural and historical contexts.
