Dr. Nadezhda Mamontova is a Newton International Fellow at the University of Birmingham’s School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. She holds a PhD in Geography and the Environment from the University of Oxford and a Kandidatskaya (equivalent to a PhD) in History from the Russian Academy of Sciences. Her research focuses on Siberian and Arctic Studies, particularly Indigenous cartography, geological anthropology, and indigenous geoontologies.

She has conducted fieldwork among Evenki and other Indigenous communities in the Russian North since 2007. Mamontova’s recent projects include a GIS-based Indigenous toponymic platform funded by Canada’s Research Strategic Initiatives Grant.
Her publications explore topics like nuclear legacies in the Soviet Arctic, Ewenki river naming practices, and Indigenous cartographic systems. Awards include the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship and Newton International Fellowship.
She has advised international bodies like the European Council and Exxon Neftegas, and served on the UK Polar Network’s organizing committee. Current research emphasizes collaborative approaches to preserving Indigenous knowledge systems.
