NIKOLAOS CHRISSIS

Nikolaos Chrissis is an Assistant Professor of Medieval European History at the Department of History and Archaeology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, within the School of Philosophy. He specializes in Byzantine-Western relations, the Crusades, and Latin presence in the Eastern Mediterranean from the 11th to 15th centuries. Previously, he held a position at Democritus University of Thrace and taught at institutions including Royal Holloway (University of London), University of Birmingham, and the Hellenic Open University. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary analysis of intercultural interactions, papal policies, and identity formation in medieval Mediterranean contexts.

Chrissis earned his PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London, with prior degrees from the University of Athens and King’s College London. His academic contributions include monographs like Crusading in Frankish Greece (2012) and co-edited volumes such as Byzantium and the West: Perception and Reality (2019). He currently serves as Secretary of the Society for the Study of the Crusades and the Latin East and an Associate Editor of the journal Crusades.

Research interests span papal strategies in the Levant, crusader rhetoric, and the socio-political dynamics of Frankish Greece. His work bridges medieval history and cultural studies, analyzing how Latin and Byzantine elites navigated conflict and cooperation. Notable publications explore post-1204 Byzantium’s ideological struggles, merchant-driven crusading networks, and Emperor Theodore Laskaris’ role in Nicaean revival.
