Mārtiņš Boiko is a Professor in the Department of Musicology at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA), where he has been teaching since 1982. He also serves as a Guest Professor and Head of the Department of Communications at the European Studies Faculty of Riga Stradiņš University. He holds a Dr.philol. (equivalent to PhD in Philology) from the University of Hamburg (1995) and was appointed State Professor at JVLMA in 2004.
Education:
- Flute performance and music theory at Emīls Dārziņš Secondary Music School
- Bachelor/Master's at JVLMA (graduated with honors, 1984)
- PhD in Philosophy (University of Hamburg, 1995), later equated to Dr.philol. in Latvia
Research Focus: His work explores Baltic traditional music, vocal polyphony (e.g., Lithuanian sutartinės), acoustic bio-communications, Catholic psalmody oral traditions, music's role in identity, Russian Old Believers' music in Latvia, and soundscape analysis. He integrates ethnomusicological methods across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral education.
Awards: Recognized as State Professor at JVLMA (2004).
Teaching & Leadership: Leads ethnomusicology study programs and interdisciplinary courses. Active in shaping academic policies at European Studies Faculty.
