Mónica Carril

Mónica Carril is an Ikerbasque Research Associate Professor at the Biofisika Institute (CSIC, EHU), University of the Basque Country, where she leads the FluoroNanoTools Laboratory. Her research focuses on developing fluorinated nanoprobes for in vivo imaging applications using magnetic resonance techniques.

Her research interests include in vivo imaging of dynamic biological processes such as protein corona formation and enzymatic activity, leveraging fluorinated nanoprobes and 19F MRI. She specializes in designing water-soluble, customizable nanoparticles with magnetic resonance properties for diagnostic and delivery applications. Her interdisciplinary work bridges chemistry, nanotechnology, and biomedical imaging.

Mónica has published in high-impact journals such as Nature Communications and Angewandte Chemie International Edition, reflecting her contributions to molecular imaging and nanomaterial design. Her work demonstrates a strong trend in developing novel imaging agents with translational potential in medicine.

She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at RWTH Aachen and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and later held prestigious fellowships at CIC biomaGUNE. She is the co-founder and former co-chair of the young Spanish Molecular Imaging Network (ySMIN), established in 2015, promoting early-career collaboration in molecular imaging. She advises emerging researchers and contributes to training initiatives in her field.

Mónica leads the FluoroNanoTools Laboratory at the Biofisika Institute, a multidisciplinary research team focused on the synthesis and application of fluorinated nanomaterials for biomedical imaging. The lab integrates expertise in chemistry, physics, and biology to advance non-invasive diagnostic tools.
