Máté Bezdek is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Chemistry at ETH Zürich. He earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Calgary, PhD from Princeton University under Paul Chirik, and postdoctoral experience at MIT with Timothy Swager. His research focuses on synthetic organometallic chemistry, inorganic-carbon nanomaterial hybrids, and chemical sensors for environmental pollutants.
His research interests include:
- Organometallic Chemistry: Proton-coupled electron transfer, ammonia interconversion, and ethylene upconversion.
- Chemical Sensors: Methane, hydrogen sulfide, and oxygen detection under visible light.
- Carbon Nanomaterial Hybrids: Functionalization of carbon nanotubes and graphene for stimuli-responsive applications.
Recent publications highlight work on redox-stable thiophene systems, ambipolar redox electrolytes for batteries, and phosphine oxide-functionalized nanomaterials. His group employs molecular aerobic oxidation catalysis and organometallic synthesis to address environmental and energy challenges.
Scientific awards include:
- Thieme Chemistry Journals Award (2024)
- ACS Inorganic Chemistry Young Investigator (2020)
- Porter Ogden Jacobus Fellowship (2019)
- NSERC Predoctoral Fellowship (2015)
- Canadian Society of Chemical Industry Award (2014)
His group at ETH Zürich develops stimuli-responsive molecules and materials, with a Lab Tour highlighting synthesis and sensor development workflows.
