Myles D. Moody is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Kentucky. His research focuses on racial disparities in health, psychosocial stressors, racism, and health equity, particularly examining the impacts of vicarious racism and institutional racism on Black Americans’ well-being. He also serves as an Associate Scientist at the UAB School of Public Health’s Center for Study of Community Health.
Education: BA in Sociology from Morehouse College, MA in Sociology from the University of Memphis, PhD in Sociology from the University of Kentucky.
Research interests include the life course, mental health disparities, and the neurobiological effects of social stress linked to racism. His work bridges sociology, public health, and psychology, with recent studies analyzing secondhand discrimination’s effects on Black youth and adults, and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. His teaching includes courses on societal inequalities and introductory sociology.
His publications explore topics such as allostatic load, vicarious discrimination, and racialized pain disparities, with a focus on Black communities. He has collaborated on interventions targeting health equity in incarcerated populations and substance use disorder treatment access.
