Professor Mykolas Romeris (1880–1945) was a foundational figure in Lithuanian Constitutional Law and a prominent legal scholar. He held the position of Rector at Vilnius University for seven years across three terms and contributed significantly to the development of Lithuania’s legal framework. His academic career spanned teaching, research, and public service, including roles in the Supreme Tribunal and international legal disputes. Romeris authored seminal works on constitutional and administrative law, and his legacy includes the Sovietisation of Lithuania from 1940–1941 brochure, pivotal during Lithuania’s independence movement.
Education: Studied at Petersburg’s Empire Law College, Jagiellonian University (Kraków), and the Paris Independent Political College. His research focused on constitutional law, international law, and Lithuanian national identity. He was recognized with multiple medals and international academic memberships.
Key contributions include strengthening Lithuania’s sovereignty over the Klaipeda region via the Hague tribunals and laying the groundwork for modern Lithuanian constitutional studies. His works remain foundational in legal education and are commemorated through conferences, documentaries, and named facilities at Vilnius and Kaunas Universities.
