Myfel D. Paluga is an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Sciences, University of the Philippines-Mindanao, specializing in anthropology with a focus on indigenous knowledge systems and oral traditions in Southeast Asia. He holds a BA (cum laude) in History from Mindanao State University and an MA in Anthropology from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
His research explores human-animal relations, notably through studies on Philippine macaques and collaborative projects on the Tolalang epic of the Pantaron Manobos. He has participated in transnational initiatives like the Nippon Foundation’s Asian Public Intellectuals fellowship and the “Human-Ecological Balance in Asia” project (2009–2012). Currently, he chairs the Department of Social Sciences and serves on the Board of Trustees of Salugpungan Ta Tanu Igkanugon Community Learning Center, an indigenous peoples’ school system in Davao.
Paluga’s work bridges anthropology, environmental studies, and cultural preservation, emphasizing community-driven research. His publications include monographs on Philippine palms and ancient scripts, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to understanding cultural and ecological dynamics.
