Muzhe Yang is the MacFarlane Professor of Economics in the College of Business at Lehigh University. His research centers on identifying environmental and socioeconomic determinants of adverse health outcomes among vulnerable populations, particularly infants and pregnant women, while addressing causal relationships with policy relevance.
- Ph.D., Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of California, Berkeley (2008)
- M.A., Economics, Peking University (2002)
- B.A., Economics, Peking University (2000)
Yang’s research spans health economics, applied econometrics, and public policy. He investigates environmental stressors (air, noise, light, water pollution) and behavioral factors (commuting, work during pregnancy) affecting maternal and infant health. His work also explores peer effects in medical prescribing, the impact of quality information on healthcare markets, and the socioeconomic consequences of policies like paid maternity leave and abortion rights. Recent studies analyze circadian misalignment and the mental health implications of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Yang’s empirical work often leverages quasi-experimental designs and econometric methods to assess policy impacts. His publications address topics such as lead contamination, aviation noise, and international trade, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement with environmental science, public health, and behavioral economics. Articles frequently intersect maternal health, environmental regulation, and economic behavior.
Yang’s research has been featured in major media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today, highlighting its societal relevance. His methodological expertise in treatment effect analysis and causal inference underpins studies with actionable insights for policymakers.
At Lehigh, Yang teaches courses in statistical methods, econometrics, and advanced econometrics (Ph.D.). His office is located in RBC 456, and he maintains an active research program with collaborations spanning multiple institutions.
