Musah Salifu is an Associate Senior Lecturer in the Division of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering at Luleå University of Technology, Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering. His research focuses on applied geochemistry with particular emphasis on environmental impacts of mining activities and waste management.
Dr. Salifu's research interests span several key areas in environmental geochemistry:
- Hydrogeochemical processes in mine waste environments
- Stable and radiogenic isotope applications in environmental tracing
- Mine drainage characterization and mitigation strategies
- Geochemical behavior of contaminants in mining-impacted waters
- Waste rock management and closure planning
- Numerical modeling of long-term geochemical behavior
His recent research has focused on developing numerical models to understand and predict long-term hydrogeochemical behavior of waste rock piles, with particular attention to neutral mine drainage systems containing nickel contamination. Dr. Salifu has made significant contributions to understanding isotopic signatures in mining-impacted waters, which has important implications for environmental monitoring and remediation.
Dr. Salifu maintains active collaborations with researchers from the Institut de recherche en mines et en environnement at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue, indicating strong international research connections in the field of mine environment management. His work bridges theoretical geochemical understanding with practical applications for the mining industry, particularly addressing challenges related to neutral mine drainage which has traditionally received less attention than acid mine drainage.
