Murugesu Sivapalan is a Professor of Geography and Geographic Information Science, and Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on hydrologic processes, human-induced environmental changes, and socio-hydrology—the study of feedbacks between social and hydrological systems. He emphasizes addressing water management challenges in developing countries and leads international collaborations to tackle Anthropocene-related issues.
Dr. Sivapalan holds degrees from Princeton University (Ph.D., M.A.), the Asian Institute of Technology (M.Eng.), and the University of Ceylon (B.S.). His work spans rainfall-runoff dynamics, extreme events, and interdisciplinary solutions for water scarcity. He has contributed to frameworks like socio-hydrology and co-authored influential papers on water security and climate resilience.
His research interests include:
- Predictions in ungauged basins
- Climate-soil-vegetation interactions
- Hydrologic change in socio-ecological contexts
- Global water governance
- Reservoir expansion in semi-arid regions
- Water management in developing countries
Recent work explores transdisciplinary approaches to socio-hydrology, urban human-water system resilience, and drought mitigation strategies. He advocates for science integrating local knowledge with global policy to achieve sustainable development goals.
