Murray Wickett is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Brock University. He specializes in comparative race relations, with a focus on African American, Native American, and European interactions in the U.S. frontier. His research emphasizes Oklahoma and California during critical historical periods like the Gold Rush era and Reconstruction.
His notable work includes the book Contested Territory: Whites, Native Americans and African Americans in Oklahoma, 1865-1907 (2000), which was nominated for the Frederick Jackson Turner Award. He also published "The Fear of Negro Domination" in Chronicles of Oklahoma (2000). Current projects explore unfree labor systems in California, including a forthcoming manuscript on slavery in the region.
Teaching interests include courses on African American culture, First Nations history, comparative slavery, and U.S. history surveys.
