Murray Noreen

Murray Noreen (19??–2011) was a distinguished academic in molecular genetics. She held a Personal Chair in Molecular Genetics at the University of Edinburgh from 1988 to 2001 and served as a Professor there since 1967. Previously, she conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University (1960–1964) and earned her Ph.D. in 1959 from the University of Birmingham.

Her research focused on molecular genetics and genetic engineering, contributing foundational insights to these fields. She was elected to the Royal Society in 1982 and the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1989, receiving the prestigious Gabor Medal from the Royal Society in 1989. In 2002, she was honored as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She also received honorary degrees from four universities.
