Dr. Muriel Lamarque is a Lecturer in Public Health at the Sheffield Institute of Social Sciences, part of the College of Social Sciences and Arts at Sheffield Hallam University. Her academic journey includes a Bachelor’s in Anthropology from the National University of La Plata (2015), an MSc in Applied Anthropology, Health, and Community Development from the University of Salamanca (Spain), and a PhD in Health and Development in the Tropics (2021), also from the University of Salamanca.
Her research focuses on migrant health, social inequalities, and traditional healing practices, adopting a Critical Medical Anthropology and Social Epidemiology approach. Current projects examine Latin American migrants’ health-seeking behaviors in Europe, transnational health networks, and the persistence of traditional healing practices in urban settings. She critiques restrictive healthcare policies and explores how marginalized communities navigate healthcare systems.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and postgraduate modules such as Power, Sex and the Body, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and Health, Culture and Public Health Development Work. She also supervises postgraduate dissertations.
Her publications span topics like migrant healthcare access, childhood obesity’s socioeconomic determinants, and sustainable food systems. Research methodologies include ethnography, mixed-methods analysis, and social network theory. She collaborates with third-sector organizations and hospitals to address social determinants of health.
Lamarque’s work emphasizes community-based interventions and the role of gender in health practices. She advocates for policies that reduce health inequities and improve access to culturally appropriate care.
