Muriel Adrien

Muriel Adrien is a Lecturer in the Department of the English-speaking World at the University of Toulouse Jean-Jaurès, affiliated with the Center for Anglophone Studies (CAS). She teaches English-language visual arts, image analysis methodology, and translation. She earned her Doctorate in 2007 from Marc Bloch University of Strasbourg and has been a lecturer since 2008.

Her research centers on British and North American visual arts, with a focus on painting and photography from the 18th to 20th centuries. She explores intermediality, portraiture, sensory experience in art, and the intersection of art and scientific or cultural themes. Her work often examines artists such as Joseph Wright of Derby, Thomas Gainsborough, and John Martin, as well as contemporary photographers like Franco Fontana and Arno Brignon.

The recent publications reflect a strong engagement with exhibition reviews, artist interviews, and editorial work, particularly in the journal Miranda, which she founded and edits. Her scholarly output spans art historical analysis, cultural critique, and interdisciplinary methodologies, often bridging visual studies with literary and cultural theory.
