Mukul Kumar serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy at the School of Social Ecology, University of California, Irvine, where he is based in the Social Ecology I building.

His research critically examines the intersections of environmental policy, social justice, and political economy, with particular focus on fossil fuel divestment movements and their implications for marginalized communities. His work bridges urban studies with climate migration patterns, analyzing how border enforcement regimes interact with ecological crises while centering Asian and Asian American perspectives in environmental discourse. This interdisciplinary approach reveals systemic power dynamics in sustainability governance.
