Mujde Erten-Unal is a Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Old Dominion University (ODU), affiliated with the Batten College of Engineering & Technology. Her work focuses on environmental engineering, pollution prevention, sustainable development, and adaptive design strategies for coastal communities facing sea level rise. She has held federal and state grants totaling over $1M, including projects on wastewater security, toxic pollutant management, and sustainable engineering education.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Missouri University of Science and Technology (1988)
- M.Eng in Environmental and Planning Engineering, Missouri University of Science and Technology (1983)
- B.S. in Urban and Regional Planning, Middle East Technical University (1979)
Research Interests: Biological wastewater treatment, green infrastructure, adaptive coastal design, and interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges. Her work bridges engineering solutions with community engagement, particularly in low-lying urban areas like Norfolk, Virginia. She emphasizes practical applications of sustainable development principles in both industrial and municipal contexts.
Grants & Projects:
- "SECURE" grant ($498K): Integrating sustainable engineering concepts into research (2009-2012)
- Elizabeth River Watershed study ($90K): Prioritizing toxic pollutant risks
- Center for Sustainable Development ($30K): State-funded initiative (2001-2003)
Labs & Teams: Collaborates with ODU's Coastal Adaptation & Resilience initiative and has led interdisciplinary teams on projects like the Flood Resiliency Clearinghouse Program. Her recent work includes developing community-centric approaches to coastal hazard management and eco-friendly packaging innovations.
