Muhammed Afolabi

Muhammed Afolabi is a Clinical Associate Professor in Global Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Department of Disease Control. He holds adjunct positions at the University of Sierra Leone and the University of The Gambia. His academic credentials include an MBBS from the University of Ibadan, an MPH from Obafemi Awolowo University, and a PhD from LSHTM. He is also a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians, Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and Faculty of Public Health (FFPH).

Afolabi leads research in vaccine development and integrated disease control, focusing on malaria, Ebola, and helminths in West Africa. His UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship explores integrated helminth-malaria interventions. Research themes include:

• Vaccine efficacy trials for Ebola and malaria
• Geospatial mapping of co-endemic diseases
• Implementation science for low-resource settings
• Innovative consent methodologies for low-literacy populations

His publications emphasize clinical trials, integrated disease management, and pandemic response, with recent work on COVID-19 vaccination in Africa and co-infections in children.

As Digital Learning Champion at LSHTM, he develops educational tools. He serves on WHO SAGE COVID-19 and Nuffield Council on Bioethics committees, and edits for PLOS Global Public Health.
