Previously, he served as Chief of Transplantation of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Program at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute / the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has held faculty positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Rush University, Chicago, and has been involved in Xenotransplantation Research since 1991.
Education:
- 1989 MBBS (MD), Medicine, Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan
- 2023 DSc (Hon), Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan

Dr. Mohiuddin has devoted his entire career to Xenotransplantation research, focusing on cardiac xenotransplantation from genetically engineered pigs to humans. His pioneering work has demonstrated prolonged survival in heterotopic and orthotopic cardiac Xenotransplantation, with his most notable achievement being the world's first two genetically engineered pig-to-human heart transplants in 2022 and 2023. His research interests span immunosuppressive therapy, surgical procedures in large and small animal models, B cell immunology, immunomodulation, and bone marrow transplantation.
His publication record shows a clear progression from basic xenotransplantation research to clinical application, with early work focused on understanding immunological barriers and developing genetic modifications to pig organs, and more recent publications documenting the successful translation of this research to human patients who would otherwise have no transplant options due to the severe organ shortage crisis.
Scientific Awards:
- Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) degree from Dow University of Health Sciences (2023)
- Named one of "Nature's 10" in 2022 - Ten people who helped shape science in 2022
- Honored by National Geographic Magazine in 2025 as one of the 10 Global Visionaries
- Elected Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation (FAST)
- Current President of the International Xenotransplantation Association (IXA)
Dr. Mohiuddin has secured numerous NIH and non-NIH grants throughout his academic career to support his groundbreaking research in xenotransplantation. He serves as Associate Editor for Transplantation journal while reviewing manuscripts for many other publications. His work has established the University of Maryland as a leader in cardiac xenotransplantation research, with significant media coverage in major outlets including The New York Times, CNN, BBC, and Nature.
Dr. Mohiuddin leads the Cardiac Xenotransplantation Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center, which established the nation's first Center for Cardiac Xenotransplantation with a $24 million grant. His multidisciplinary team includes surgical specialists, immunologists, genetic engineers, and regulatory experts working collaboratively to advance xenotransplantation from experimental procedure to standard clinical practice, with the ultimate goal of solving the organ shortage crisis that claims thousands of lives annually.
