Professor Moya Lloyd is a leading scholar in political theory and gender studies at the University of Essex, currently on research leave until October 2025. As Professor of Politics in the Department of Government and former Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (2018–2021), she bridges academic leadership and rigorous research. Her work focuses on vulnerability, resistance, radical democracy, and the ethical implications of human rights, often engaging with Judith Butler’s philosophical frameworks. She holds a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship and is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (2009).
Her research explores intersections of gender, embodiment, and political agency, with notable contributions to journals like Hypatia and Theory, Culture and Society. She has authored/co-edited seven books, including the influential Butler and Ethics. Her 2017 article Naming the dead and the politics of the ‘human’ won the Review of International Studies Best Article Prize.
Professionally, she has served on editorial boards of key journals such as Contemporary Political Theory and the APSA Encyclopaedia of Political Thought. Her current projects address vulnerability among marginalized populations and the politics of resistance. She has held leadership roles in the Political Studies Association and the Britain and Ireland Association for Political Thought.
