Moussa Niangaly is the leader of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (MPIIB) partner group at the Malaria Training and Research Center (MRTC) in Bamako, Mali. He is affiliated with the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako, specifically the Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on understanding malaria parasite survival mechanisms during the dry season and their interaction with human hosts, aiming to improve malaria control strategies. Niangaly transitioned from clinical practice to research after completing his medical studies, driven by a desire to contribute to translational science.
His career began in 1998 when he joined malaria field research in his village, leading to further studies at the University of Sciences. Since 2009, he has specialized in malaria research, particularly in pregnancy-related malaria and naturally acquired immunity. Collaborating with the MPIIB, he aims to establish a lab in Mali, recruit a team, and conduct studies involving 250 participants to explore asymptomatic malaria cases during dry seasons. This work emphasizes the role of asymptomatic carriers in disease transmission, complementing clinical approaches.
Niangaly’s vision integrates scientific research with public health infrastructure improvements, such as sanitation, to combat malaria comprehensively. His partnership with MPIIB combines technical training (e.g., PCR) with local community engagement for ethical approvals and sample collection.
