Mourad Bezzeghoud is a Full Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Évora (Portugal), affiliated with the School of Sciences and Technology. He holds a PhD in Geophysics (Paris Diderot University, 1987) and habilitation in Earth and Space Sciences (University of Évora, 2011). His career includes appointments at institutions such as École des Mines de Paris, Universidade Complutense de Madrid, and the Centre de Recherche en Astronomie, Astrophysique et Géophysique (Algeria).
He has held leadership roles, including President of the Scientific Council of the School of Sciences and Technology (since 2022), Coordinator of the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT, UÉ), and Director of the Physics Department (2006–2007). His research focuses on seismotectonics, seismic hazard assessment, and geodynamics, with emphasis on the Mediterranean and North Africa regions.
Education:
- PhD in Geophysics/Seismology (Université Paris Diderot, France, 1987)
- Habilitation in Earth and Space Sciences (University of Évora, Portugal, 2011)
- DEA in Internal Geophysics and Geochemistry (Université Paris Diderot, 1982)
- Engineering Degree in Applied Geophysics (Institut National des Hydrocarbures et de la Chimie, Algeria, 1981)
Research Interests: Seismotectonics of active margins, fault dynamics, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, and integration of geophysical methods for subsurface imaging. His work spans Algeria, Portugal, and the Mediterranean region, emphasizing earthquake source characterization and crustal structure modeling.
Key Projects: Coordinator of the INCOME (sustainable resource management), PILOTSTRATEGY (CO2 geostorage), and ZOM3D (Alentejo metallogeny) projects. Lead researcher in initiatives like MITMOTION (Mitidja Basin seismic hazard) and ALERT-ES (early earthquake warning systems).
Leadership & Service: Elected roles include Vice-Director of the Center for Geophysics (since 1999), Coordinator of the Seismotectonic and Seismic Hazard research line (ICT), and member of national and international scientific committees. Active in policy and education through roles in the University of Évora’s Management and Scientific Councils.
Grants & Networks: Over 40 funded projects from institutions like FCT (Portugal), EU (e.g., FP7, Horizon 2020), and international collaborations with Algeria, Spain, France, and Morocco.
