Moshe Halbertal is the Gruss Professor of Law at New York University School of Law and a Professor of Jewish Thought and Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on Jewish Law, Philosophy of Law, and Biblical Studies. He holds a PhD from Hebrew University (1989) and was a Society of Fellows member at Harvard University (1988–1992). He has served as visiting professor at Harvard, Yale, and University of Pennsylvania Law Schools.
Halbertal's work bridges legal philosophy, Jewish textual tradition, and political theory. Notable books include *Idolatry* (1992, co-authored with Avishai Margalit), *People of the Book* (1997), and *The Beginning of Politics* (2017, co-authored with Stephen Holmes). He explores themes such as legal theory, biblical political narratives, and the interplay between religion and modernity.
His awards include the Michael Bruno Memorial Award and Goldstein-Goren Book Award. Courses taught at NYU include seminars on illiberalism in legal theory, biblical politics, and Talmudic approaches to punishment and repentance. Halbertal is also affiliated with multidisciplinary initiatives exploring Jewish thought and contemporary legal challenges.
