Moshe Ben-Akiva is the Edmund K. Turner Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), within the School of Engineering. His research focuses on transportation systems analysis, intelligent transportation systems, demand modeling, and infrastructure management, with an emphasis on energy transition and sustainable urban mobility. He holds a B.S. from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT.
Ben-Akiva has been recognized with prestigious awards, including election to the National Academy of Engineering (2025) for his contributions to transportation modeling. His work integrates agent-based simulation, econometrics, and policy analysis to address challenges in urban freight logistics, congestion pricing, and automated mobility-on-demand systems. He leads the Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab and has contributed to projects such as a DOE-funded smart mobility information system.
His research spans topics like tradable mobility credits, real-time tolling strategies, and the impact of automated vehicles on urban environments. He has authored foundational texts, including Discrete Choice Analysis, and collaborates on global initiatives to advance sustainable transportation solutions.
