He also holds the title of Senior Global Futures Scientist within the Global Futures Scientists and Scholars program. He joined ASU in 1999 after working in private industry as a microbiology research manager. Abbaszadegan is the founding director of the NSF-funded Water & Environmental Technology (WET) Center, which addresses water quality challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences/Microbiology and Immunology, University of Arizona (Dissertation: Detection of Giardia Cysts)
- M.S. in Applied Microbiology, Northern Arizona University
- B.S. in Microbiology, University of Montana
Research Interests:
Abbaszadegan specializes in health-related water microbiology, including microbial detection methodologies, pathogen inactivation/removal in treatment processes, water distribution systems, and source-water monitoring. He has pioneered techniques for detecting viruses, bacteria, and parasites in environmental samples. His work emphasizes practical solutions for water quality challenges, such as disinfection by-product control and groundwater contamination.
Professional Roles:
- Editor of the Journal of Water and Health (IWA Publishing)
- Chair, Section 9510 (Detection of Enteric Viruses) for Standard Methods
Grants & Collaborations:
Abbaszadegan has led numerous projects, including the NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (WET Center) and collaborations with organizations like Shell Global Solutions, the Central Arizona Project, and municipal water utilities. His research spans antimicrobial coatings, biofilm control, and microbial source tracking in surface waters.
Awards:
- Outstanding Research Team Award, University of Arizona
Teaching:
He developed courses such as Environmental Microbiology (CEE 467/567) and mentors students through honors theses, directed studies, and applied projects.
