Dr. Moritz Büchi is a Senior Research and Teaching Associate in the Media Change and Innovation Division at the Department of Communication and Media Research, University of Zurich. His work bridges communication studies, sociology, and psychology to examine the complex relationship between digital media use and subjective well-being.
His research focuses on developing theoretical frameworks that connect digital practices to well-being outcomes, with particular emphasis on both harmful and beneficial pathways. Rather than simplistic determinism, Büchi advocates for nuanced approaches that recognize digital media as neither inherently good nor bad but context-dependent.
Büchi's research reveals that digital well-being studies should prioritize descriptive validity and formal theory development. His work shows that findings depend on specific aspects of digital media use, well-being measures, and intervening factors, requiring precise theoretical frameworks rather than generalized claims about digital media effects.
His research has been supported by a Research Talent Development Grant from the University of Zurich Alumni organization, and he has conducted work as a Fellow of the Digital Society Initiative at University of Zurich and as a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics.
Dr. Büchi has contributed significantly to understanding digital inequality, the subjective impacts of internet use, and how digital practices shape social well-being in contemporary society. His approach integrates sociological perspectives with psychological insights to create more comprehensive models of digital media effects.
