Morgan Sheng, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor in MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and a Core Institute Member at the Broad Institute, serving as Co-Director of the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research. His work focuses on neurobiological mechanisms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. He led neuroscience research at Genentech (2008–2019), advancing therapeutics targeting nervous system disorders. Sheng’s research integrates transcriptomics, proteomics, and electrophysiology to uncover disease pathways and identify therapeutic targets. Awards include Royal Society Fellowship and membership in the National Academy of Medicine. His lab investigates synaptic dysfunction, genetic animal models, and microglial roles in neurodegeneration, with a focus on translating findings into clinical treatments.
Education: B.A. (Oxford University), M.D. & Ph.D. (London/UCSF/Harvard Medical School). Current affiliations include the Picower Institute and McGovern Institute for Brain Research. Team includes postdocs and researchers studying glutamate signaling, synaptic plasticity, and neuroimmune interactions. Notable contributions include STARmap PLUS spatial transcriptomics and proteomic profiling of schizophrenia/bipolar synapses.
