Morag Northey is a Strings Instructor and Off-Campus Instructor of Cello at Mount Royal University's School of Music. She holds a B.Mus. from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.Mus. from the University of Calgary, alongside certifications from the Victoria Conservatory of Music and Camosun College. Her career spans 35 years of teaching, emphasizing Suzuki and Kodàly methods, and includes directing the Good Vibrations Cello Choir at Calgary's Garrison Green Seniors Residence.
Northey is a distinguished performer and composer, recognized with a Betty Mitchell Award for her composition in the play Butcher. Her works include the albums This is the Life and Lilies of the Field, and she has performed for high-profile events like the 2010 Olympics and Canada Winter Games. Her technical expertise and expressive cello performances have been praised by figures such as Michaëlle Jean, former Governor General of Canada.
Northey’s pedagogical innovations include multi-age string summer boot camps and leadership in the Mount Royal University Young Cello Ensemble. Her artistic philosophy blends technical rigor with emotional resonance, fostering joy and self-expression in students and audiences alike.
