Moon Kim is the Louis Beecherl Jr. Distinguished Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT-Dallas), affiliated with the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. He holds adjunct appointments at UTSW Medical Center and is a Fellow of the Microscopy Society of America.
Education: Ph.D. (1988), M.S. (1986), B.S. (1984), and Postdoc (1990) in Materials Science from Arizona State University.
Research interests include nanomaterials integration via wafer bonding, functional nanostructure fabrication, atomic-scale characterization, and applications in electronics, energy, and bio-devices. He pioneers nano-art through TEM imaging, exhibiting works like 'Nano Starry Night' and 'Graphene Sun.'
Awards include UT-Dallas' Outstanding Researcher Award (2017) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' President’s International Fellowship (2015). His research spans 3D visualization technologies (VR/AR/holography) and collaborations with companies like Nanofactory Instruments and JEOL.
Grants include DOE-funded CdTe photovoltaic research ($195k), TI-sponsored GaN microstructure studies ($380k), and NIST-DARPA's Center for Low Energy Systems Technology ($3.36M).
He directs the Nano & Beyond Lab and the Nano-Characterization Facility, advancing TEM-based analysis and wafer bonding techniques. His work bridges science and art, featured in Science Daily and UT-Dallas Magazine.
