Dr. Montoya Whitfield is an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Marriage & Family Therapy at Pacific Oaks College, with campus locations in Pasadena and online instruction. She holds a doctorate in Applied Clinical Psychology and specializes in child play therapy and adolescent psychotherapy.
Her educational background includes a BA from Washburn University (2011), an MA from Pacific Oaks College (2014), and a PsyD from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (2021).
Dr. Whitfield’s research and clinical interests center on community mental health, child and adolescent mental health disorders, trauma, autism, substance abuse, and family therapy. She has particular expertise in early childhood development and parenting education, with a strong focus on preventing child abuse through early intervention and parent training.
Her professional work includes private practice with adolescents and adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, as well as serving as a clinical trainer at an Intensive Outpatient Program. She is a Certified Breakthrough Parenting Instructor and a published children's book author.
She plans to further develop and pilot her dissertation research in collaboration with local child welfare and family planning agencies in Los Angeles County to reduce child abuse recurrence through evidence-based parenting education focused on the first five years of life.
Dr. Whitfield’s professional skills include children and family therapy, adolescent psychotherapy, parenting support, community mental health outreach, substance abuse treatment, and program development.
