Monique Udell is a Professor in the Department of Animal & Rangeland Sciences within the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University. She directs the Human-Animal Interaction Laboratory and teaches courses on Animal Behavior & Cognition, Applied Animal Behavior, Animal Learning, Behavior Modification, and Enrichment.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Florida
- M.S. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Florida
- B.S. in Biology & Psychology from Stetson University
Dr. Udell's research centers on human-animal interactions and bonding, with emphasis on animal training and animal-assisted interventions. She investigates evolutionary and lifetime factors influencing social development in canines (dogs and wolves), domestic cats, and other species, while evaluating welfare improvements for companion, working, and production animals. Her work bridges comparative psychology, veterinary science, and animal behavior to advance understanding of cross-species relationships and welfare standards.
Recent publications demonstrate strong focus on attachment theory in human-animal relationships, cognitive testing methodologies, and evidence-based welfare practices. Key trends include debunking behavioral myths in companion animals, analyzing human influence on animal cognition, and developing interventions that benefit both humans and animals through synchronized behavioral patterns.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Featured Cover Article in Journal Animals (2022)
- Top Research Article in Journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science (2022)
- NSF VAuLTS Leadership Program Fellowship (2020)
- Wallis Annenberg PetSpace Leadership Institute Fellowship (2020)
- LL Stewart Faculty Development Award (2014)
- Psychonomic Society Award for Best Scientific Article (2011)
Dr. Udell mentors graduate students in Animal and Rangeland Sciences and has received nominations for undergraduate research mentoring excellence. Her research is supported by competitive grants including NSF programs and industry partnerships focused on human-animal interaction science. She actively collaborates with veterinary professionals and animal welfare organizations to translate research into practical applications.
The Human-Animal Interaction Laboratory (TheHumanAnimalBond.com) conducts cutting-edge research on attachment bonds, cognitive development, and welfare assessment across species, with significant implications for therapeutic interventions and animal management practices.
