Professor Moninya Roughan at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) leads oceanography initiatives under Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) since 2008. Affiliated with the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, she combines in-situ observations, autonomous platforms, and numerical models to study the East Australian Current (EAC) system, focusing on boundary currents, marine heatwaves, and climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems.
Research Interests include: dynamics of western boundary currents, cross-shelf processes, ocean warming, numerical modeling, data assimilation, and integration of traditional Indigenous knowledge with oceanography. Her work bridges physical oceanography with biogeochemical and ecological processes, emphasizing connectivity, particle dispersion, and productivity.
Recent article trends (2025-2024) span marine heatwave drivers, EAC variability, plastic pollution dynamics, and data assimilation techniques. Keywords include climate science, ocean modeling, and marine ecosystems, with subfields like eddy interactions, Lagrangian transport, and coastal monitoring networks.
