Monika Gussone is a Lecturer in Medieval and Early Modern History at the University of Mannheim's Historical Institute within the Faculty of Philosophy. She specializes in source-based research, particularly palaeography, diplomatics, and archival analysis of aristocratic documents. Her work focuses on medieval and early modern socio-economic structures, including small-scale lending systems, premodern accounting, and poor relief in towns like Kalkar. She leads the subproject on Lower Rhine towns in the DFG-funded 'Small Loans and Market Participation' initiative (2018–2022), with a forthcoming publication on Kalkar's lending systems.
Since 2022, she holds a Junior Principal Investigator Fellowship at RWTH Aachen University under Dr. Julia Exarchos, exploring laboring poor networks in medieval Europe. Her academic career includes roles as a research assistant at RWTH Aachen, internships at the Rhineland Archives, and teaching auxiliary historical sciences.
Her research spans noble governance in the Rhineland, annotated historical sources, and medieval monastic donations. Notable publications include edited volumes on noble rule and early modern archival inventories. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary projects bridging economic history and social mobility studies.
