Molly C. Sutherland is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Delaware, within the College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of cytochrome c biogenesis and heme trafficking in bacteria, particularly targeting System I and II pathways. She holds a B.S. from the University of Maryland, College Park, a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, and completed postdoctoral training there as well.
Her research interests include understanding how bacteria utilize cytochrome c proteins in respiration and photosynthesis, with a focus on heme attachment mechanisms, heme transport pathways, and the potential for these systems as novel antimicrobial targets. She has received an NSF CAREER Grant (2025) to support her work on bacterial cytochrome c synthase function.
Dr. Sutherland teaches BISC300: Introduction to Microbiology and BISC485/685: Microbial Genetics. Her lab, located in Wolf Hall, employs biochemical, molecular, and microbiological techniques. Current projects investigate heme binding domains, heme attachment requirements, and the role of cytochrome c pathways in bacterial survival. Notable advisees include Sarah Garner (senior honors thesis), Alicia Kreiman (graduate student), and Donna (undergraduate researcher).
Publications span topics like CcmCD heme transport mechanisms, structural analysis of CcmFH, and cryo-EM studies of CcsBA complexes. Her work bridges fundamental biology and applied antimicrobial research, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to microbial processes.
