Molly Brunson is an Associate Professor at Yale University with primary appointment in Slavic Languages and Literatures and secondary affiliation in History of Art. Her research spans modern Russian culture, focusing on literature and visual arts from 1840–1917, with expertise in realism, avant-garde theory, and spatial representation. She has lectured globally and served as Clark Art Institute fellow.
Her research integrates interdisciplinary approaches to examine:
- Realism's evolution across Russian and Soviet eras
- Interactions between literature and visual arts
- Material culture's role in shaping national identity
- Environmental humanities in Russian contexts
Notable publications include analyses of Surikov's spatial techniques (2018), Dostoevsky's ekphrastic methods (2016), and foundational work on Russian realisms (2016). Current projects examine mining culture in Soviet literature and co-editing material culture across empires.
Scientific recognition includes:
- 2023 short-listed for Art Newspaper Russia's Best Book
- 2017 Best Book in Cultural Studies from AATSEEL
- 2013 Poorvu Family Prize for interdisciplinary teaching
